Greetings Eaters and Readers!

I had the great honor of hosting a conversation with author Catherine Newman the other night, and was thrilled so many subscribers tuned in to listen and ask questions. A link to the recording is below in case you missed it.

We discussed the process and inspiration behind her New York Times bestselling novel Sandwich, but also, as predicted, so many other favorite topics came up: cooking as an expression of love, how to stock the fridge when college kids come home so it looks full but not desperate, the unsung joys of parenting older kids, the treasured rituals of summer vacation, the food on summer vacation and the way it just hits so different. In fact…

…When I was reading Sandwich, I kept underlining passages about that food because it all sounded so quintessentially summer, not just the lobster rolls and corn, but the Zotz and Swedish Fish picked up on the annual trip to the beach town’s candy store. Here’s the list of all the foods I underlined, which should double as a To-Cook and To-Eat Checklist for the remainder of your August.

  • Lobster Rolls and Corn (photo above is from a recent Maine vacation)

  • Tuna Salad Sandwiches with Pickled Pepperoncini

  • Mozzarella & Tomato Sandwiches with Basil and Balsamic Vinegar

  • Cold Cherries

  • Vienna Fingers and Oreos

  • Zotz, Satellite Wafers, Swedish Fish

  • Cocoa Puffs

  • Frozen Coconut Mojitos

  • Bluefish Paté with Ritz Crackers

  • Pan-fried Scallops with Jamie’s Famous Potato Salad (recipe coming soon!)

  • Peach and Burrata Salad

  • Mexican Street Corn

  • Onion Rings

  • Fried Fishermans Platter

  • Shrimp Cocktail

What will you make first?
