Really enjoy your posts every week, thank you. I wanted to recommended the best book I've read all year (I've given 8 copies of it to my friends already!)... "The Wild Edge of Sorrow: Rituals of Renewal and the Sacred Work of Grief" by Francis Weller. A book I think every human can benefit from reading!
First off, I want to say I am so sorry about your father. Second, speaking about your grief like you are doing here is a huge public service to grievers everywhere (of which I am one). Kudos to you.
When I first glanced at the salad photo I mistook the pale pink greens for flaked salmon - I bet that would be a great addition to make it a main! I have not been having great luck with Cara Cara oranges this winter but you’re inspiring me to give it another go… maybe we deserve a winter citrus box from somewhere for Valentine’s Day 😄
My son gave me Skippy Dies last year and I really liked it. My husband gave me The Bee Sting this year so I am really looking forward to reading it. He didn’t even know I had read a Paul Murray book before; he had just read a great review of Bee Sting and thought I would like it. I guess he also thought he would like it since he just started reading it before me. I’m making my way through The Covenant of Water which I love. I also read a book recently that I loved - maybe Hello Beautiful? - and was reading the acknowledgements at the end which I always read thinking I might know someone ( I never do), but this time I saw that the author thanked Andy Ward!! I was like - I know that guy!!!
I recently discover your inspiring newsletters. I am so excited about your book! I downloaded it yesterday (would prefer hardcopy, but I live in a small condo in Palm Beach, so I have learned to be a minimalist so thanks for offering it in ebook format). Congratulations Jenny on your book! I am excited to begin cooking through it.
I made your yogurt flatbread a few weeks ago to have with the NYT chicken shawarma you had recommended. Delicious! I needed a bit more flour, perhaps because my Greek yogurt was a little loose. I was thrilled at how fast, easy, tender and high-quality the flatbread turned out to be. I think I could make it weekly. Thank you, JR!
I loved The Bee Sting but... did anyone else find its anachronistic treatment of technology odd? The book appeared to be set in either 2008 or 2009 but everyone had iPhones and Instagram. It felt really bizarre as someone who was a teenager at that time!
That is so interesting! I never thought of that -- speaks more to me, maybe, the idea that I can't remember a time when they weren't around. Suspension of disbelief I guess.
I just read an article today that said limiting protein is good for the kidneys. Now I think I need The Weekday Vegetarians! And I’m definitely trying the Pasta con Ceci and the salad.
Love that it’s so calming reading your newsletter.
Don't read the Bee Sting, haha

Thank you, Lexi. I hope you are holding up ok.

Omg same! I was coming here to ask where Jenny buys her salmon because it looked so excellent 😆
Yes, you're probably right - just take that butter fried salmon and mix it right in there. I find I'm just now getting the good Cara Caras.

How to Be a Person is already on its way to me and this is making me even more excited to dive in! Very grateful for David Brooks.
I'm sorry about your father. It took me six months before I could say "Daddy" without crying. It's so hard to be in the world without a dad.

I love your words, the photo of everything near your window, your view… my mom ingrained in me to always use a big bowl for tossing and mixing.
I totally see what you mean about that window scene… I can see the little guy and his giant spoon jump around with dough !!!! What a great view.

yes, it's very flexible luckily -- and so smart to serve with the shawarma, I'm totally going to do that!

I have bee sting on my nightstand and am totes going to start it next! sounds amazing . . .
Thanks, Jenny, for directing me to my copy of "The Weekday Vegetarians." Instead of driving to the store for bread I will make yogurt flatbread.
coating a tablespoon with a tiny bit of neutral oil before measuring sticky things like honey is a GREAT tip!
