My SIL lives in Grassington, where the village scenes in All Creatures Great and Small are filmed, and it’s ever more beautiful than it looks on tv. She was showing us pics of how they transform the village for shooting, covering up road markings and changing the shop names etc.
Has anyone else tried the NYT Alex Weibel mushroom shawarma? I had a last min dinner party last weekend for some vegetarian friends and it was a huge hit. We more than doubled the mushrooms and threw in a mix of wild and portobello. Did the sauce along side fermented cabbage -and home made tzatziki. Had kale salad and Jenny’s harissa carrot salad on the side and made sure to use really good pitas (I picked up mine from Sami and Susu pita shop on Orchard St in NYC) I wish we could gift recipes so sorry for the paywall but worth sharing for those with a subscription. https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1020291-vegetarian-mushroom-shawarma-pitas?smid=ck-recipe-iOS-share
Thanks for this idea, so cool! You can gift recipes to the NYT, just click on the "gift" button next to "save" above the recipe and underneath the star rating. At least that's how I do it -- you get 10 every month.
I have a birthday coming up, and like to host a dinner party for a mixture of meat eaters and vegetarians. I think I am going to combine Jenny's dinner and this and run with it!
I just finished "All You Have to Do Is Call" by Kerri Maher, which is, unfortunately, once again topical. It is set in my neighborhood in the early 1970s, which was fun.
I just ended up spending Sunday tearing through 'The Librarianist' (I only meant to read for an hour or so!) and I fully recommend it. Not too heavy, but not "light", and the structure is really well done, I think.
Still working through The Luminaries (not the YA book). It’s a complex plot but so intriguing. I’m loving it!
Recently read Homecoming as well (by Kate...). Some found it overly descriptive (I’d compare to The Goldfinch) but that didn’t bother me - I thought it was excellent.
So many good suggestions for reading and eating i don't know where to start! Speaking of which I am really loving The Upstairs Delicatessen by Dwight Garner which feels VERY Jenny and Andy.
Oh, I loved All Creatures Great and Small too! I actually just rewatched the previous seasons! I would love to hear more on how you make the most of living in NYC. My youngest joins her sister in Boston (for college) next year. We live in NJ and my husband works in midtown. I am feeling rather unmoored and occasionally think about New York living, but every time I go in, I am overwhelmed by the smell and lack of green. Perhaps if I could find a volunteer organization to get involved with. (I currently cook with a group of women for the families of women dealing with breast cancer).
I loved loved Elizabeth McCracken’s “The Hero of this Book”--depending on your mood, now might be the perfect time to read it, or you may feel like you want to give it a few months. And my condolences on the loss of your dad, may his memory be a blessing...
When my father died, a dear friend recommend I watched The Durrels of Corfu and it was just the balm I needed. Sounds like ACGS is doing just that for you. I will have to watch, because in a synchronistic moment, I have such fond memories of my dad reading the book to me when I a little girl. I hope you continue to be gentle with yourself and give yourself lots of grace. Keeping you ever present in my thoughts, Jenny.
This looks like a delicious recipe will try this week! Have made pretzel panko chicken and grandmas meatballs in ragu with polenta .. we are smitten with your recipes . 🙏 🙏😍
Okay, putting that shwarma on my list for later this week. But also, we love All Creatures Great and Small and were so happy to get to watch the new season, ep. 1. I actually DVR them so that we can rewatch when we need something cozy :)
Thanks for the delicious ideas! Fish parcels were a go to for my mum when I was growing up too - she pops a few tablespoons of coconut milk in each parcel to help it make its own sauce! I’ll have to make them soon with the rebranded name for my toddler!!
My husband is Egyptian and deeply skeptical of American versions of “Arab” food and we make the Sam Sifton Chicken Schwarma recipe at least once a month. We make our own white sauce with lots of garlic and we eat it with Costco pita bread and Mexican Cokes.

Also, the cauliflower shawarma
On NYT Cooking is wonderful, by Melissa Clark
This sounds AMAZING!
Oooh. Thank you for sharing!! I was thinking of trying a tofu swap with the first recipe since we don’t eat meat.

Thanks for the shawarma suggestion. Here are two other sheet pan recipes that are in regular rotation in our house: Smitten Kitchen's Tikka Masala (https://smittenkitchen.com/2016/04/sheet-pan-chicken-tikka/) and Sheet Pan Fajitas (https://damndelicious.net/wprm_print/32029/) from Damn Delicious.

Homecoming by Kate Morton - I loved that one too. So atmospheric, felt totally engulfed in the scenes.

I have that on my list!

Don't you all love ARCs? Great way to find new authors.
Definitely trying the shawarma recipe. Thanks for sharing. We absolutely LOVE All Creatures Great & Small. I wish there were more shows like it.
Just finished Michael Cunningham's latest book, Day, and noticed your husband was his editor. Great book!

Oh yes, it has a lot of the same sweetness... and even some similarities in the goofy love smitten male who is still finding himself!
