Going to use up the last of our garden tomatoes and make that soup. Hopefully using fresh, a bit over ripe tomatoes won't ruin it.
I loved listening to Magnusson's book while declutter---it is like having a fascinating elder tell you stories. They aren't necessarily helpful but they do motivate you to not leave tons for your children to go through. I'm looking forward to her one on aging soon.
Photos.... I’m still cleaning out the boxes of photos my parents and in-laws left behind. The last of our elders has been gone for 9 years. Ironically, we moved to a bigger house soon after, so all their “stuff” just moved with us. I need to pretend I’m moving back to a tiny apartment!
Great column. Have been trying to convert photos onto a terabyte thing along with catch up scrapbooking, so I truly understand that part. Also, being from SW Michigan, I am glad you went to Culvers. Love their Mushroom Swiss Burger, and don't forget those Concrete Mixers!💕
Thanks for sharing the downsizing article, Jenny! I feel inspired and reinvigorated to approach the Way Too Much Stuff before inviting in a realtor! always gems to be found here
Was about to rush into the kitchen to make that tomato soup when I remembered I’m making the chicken sausage/ cabbage dish from last week. And I having that Snacking book being delivered on my birthday next week!
This simple tomato soup with rice sounds just right for gloomy end-of-fall days! And what a wonderful quote: I am printing it out to save in my own "can't throw away pile!"
This was lovely to read. I also have wonderful stories from selling on Marketplace. I did the great Photo Purge before downsizing from my home to apartment, and it was amazing what I had stored that I didn't even know I had - random pictures of mountains, duplicates (remember those!), and more. There's something empowering to have all of my belongings (no garage, no storage) in a two-bedroom apartment. A gift.
thanks Jenny! You can also link to Bookshop.com that supports local bookstores :)
Thanks, jenny! Immersion blending the rice made it a bit gluey in texture. I think next time I'll avoid that part. Great idea otherwise 👍
You probably already know, but Jane Hamiliton is also a Carleton grad! 1979 according to the Alumni directory.
Seeing a Culver's mention made my midwest heart swell. I hope you enjoy your time in Minnesota when you visit. I'm an Iowan, but I love Minnesota!

I love that Jane Hamilton quote - do you happen to remember where it's from?
