John Ehle is the father of Jennifer Ehle who played Lizzie Bennett in the most famous adaption of Pride and Prejudice. I own a copy of a book he wrote about the cheeses of the British Empire.
I found a recipe for salt and vinegar fingerling potatoes and I have some growing in my garden thanks to a seed potato donor. I don’t think it’s coincidence that I’m reading this ♥️ I’m even more excited to make them after harvest!
as a born and bred rhode islander i can tell you that in many places in new england, but especially RI, malt vinegear is a staple in the little condiment caddy that sits on every table, and it is absolutely for the fries. whenever someone is confused by it, i always ask, "but haven't you ever had salt and vinegar chips?" This Is The Way.
also, given how many books you read, i would say despite it's popularity that book discussion was actually a pretty big "what are the chances" moment after all! i really want to get back into reading. i used to be such a voracious reader as a kid but then, i don't know if it's mental health related, or internet-everything-everywhere related, or age related or what but my attention span has just gotten so that every time i try i feel like i have to read the same page or even paragraph ten times before anything actually gets processed. it's a very tiring and frustrating experience. does anyone else have this problem? any tips? i will say substack has been helping, setting some time aside every day to read everyone's dispatches and usually some accompanying links, too (so thank you!) and i hope i can read a real, actual, delicious paper smelling book again soon.
I stopped reading for many years for the same reason. A couple of years ago, I decided to give audiobooks a try and its been a great success. I now have at least one book (and occasionally two) in progress at all times. Good luck finding a path back to reading that works for you.
i have definitely been listening to a lot of podcasts (or maybe, a lot of a few select podcasts is more accurate), and i never think about audiobooks! this is a good idea, thank you <3
Hi! I know exactly what you mean so I wanted to share a book that snapped me out of a non-reading time in my life a few years ago: Lady in the Lake by Laura Lippman. Not my usual genre at all, but someone told me it was just really easy? fun? (Neither of these is quite the right word...) to read. I went for it, and it did the trick! I’m back to reading about a novel a week and life is good. Don’t give up! Books will save us all 💕
Came to say I got some of the Thomas Fuchs melamine dinnerware as a gift to celebrate a friend's new anxiously awaited patio. It's really pretty and seems well made if anyone is looking for some outdoor dinnerware. Thanks for the recommendation!
It's not summer until we've had grilled corn on the cob and artichokes! We live in a landlocked state so finding good salmon is a pain. We tried the frozen salmon from Costco tonight and I was really surprised at how good it was! Salmon salad, here I come...
Loved seeing a peak of your trip to Maine, Jenny! I can’t wait to go back to Vermont again soon. I just finished Remarkably Bright Creatures (so good!) last night and Covenant of Water is on my nightstand now! (Got it at Northshire!)
I’d love to know where you had the lobster rolls in the picture. I’ve enjoyed them at Red’s and at Sprague’s right across the street, but yours look spectacular! I’m on hold at the library for the Verghese book. Can’t wait!

I’m sleepy this morning... due to the fact that I have been up almost all night reading “The Covenant of Water”. What a beautiful masterpiece.
