I've got THE OTHER SIGNIFICANT OTHERS on hold at the library, but even the concept speaks to me so thoroughly! We've been lucky to end up in a house close to a bunch of great friends - one couple who, when we were looking at a house to buy in our city, we purposely tried to stay close to, and then some new close friends on our little cul de sac that has big college dorm vibes as we all pop over to each other's porches and kitchens and wave to each other out of our office windows. Even though the city we live in isn't my favorite, the closeness to friends is SUCH an important part of our lives. I wouldn't trade it!
My close college friends and I are constantly talking about “moving to a commune together one day” in as you call it the abstract. We reference retirement years and this fantasy seems to not include husbands 😂 I love the idea of this actually being a possibility (with husbands in tow) and appreciate the book recommendation! In fact I appreciate all of your food related and non food related ideas and have been a fan of yours since waaay back! I am very sorry for the loss of your dad and hope that your work and community have given you some solace in this difficult time.
I'm wondering about the difference between this focaccia and the one from Alexandra Cooks (which I had thought I got from you a few years ago, but perhaps not?). I can calculate the differences between the recipes - what I mean is that what is it about the end product of this one that is better? The two are very similar, and nearly identical in technique. Always happy to improve, but also don't want to mess with a good thing if I don't have to. Thanks!
My daughter and I made the homemade focaccia today - it turned Our lazy Saturday afternoon lunch into the main event of our weekend. Thank you for the inspiration !
I have not yet read Rhaina Cohen's book yet but plan to. I also really enjoyed her conversation on the Dear Nina podcast about all different kinds of friendship. So interesting to consider all of this. Also thank you for the great recipes as always!
Thanks, Rachel! I loved The Other Significant Others and was thrilled to have Rhaina on my show. She was a delight to interview. Her own living situation is super interesting too. We discussed it on the episode.
In food news, this reminded me how much I love pickled onions. And they're easy!
This email came through just after I tried to purchase my favorite focaccia here in Truckee (sold out)... maybe I'll give the recipe a go. Also interestingly, a friend was visiting (we are all 'empty nesters') and we were saying how communal living makes so much sense. It's more fun doing things together (we were cooking when we said this) and in a group someone is always game for an activity. I envy those who have already made this work!

I happen to be making braised meatballs ( and polenta) tomorrow night so obviously I’ll be making focaccia for Saturday’s dinner!
love your posts and now I must make focaccia!
The veggie burger from The Weekday Vegetarians is the best!! And pretty easy to put together. Everyone should give it a try!
