How about Andy shares how he spots good prose and how he helps coax the best out of writers?

Ahh, thank you for saying no to generative AI! I just had to be the family buzzkill explaining to my parents and in-laws why I don't think the following lyrics to a song my Mum had AI generate about her garden (??) are any good:

sweet roses climbing everywhere

giant magnolia, heavy white

holds the afternoon so light

red wine catches your smile

you could stay here for a while

Note, my parents' garden doesn't have roses or a magnolia tree, nor do they drink wine!

Thank you for not outsourcing your brain - we’d be all the worse for it!

Thank you for the post. I always tear food. I thought I was just lazy -nice to know I'm actually rustic, and casual!

You had me at "Don't you want to know what he's working on?" Can't wait!

Apologize for a dumb question but what recipe is that delicious looking salad that you tore ingredients for? It doesn’t look like the slaw linked but it does look delicious.

Ha Ha Ha! Only in the last year I have learned to tear up hard boiled eggs (eg for salads) and mushrooms

and I learned this without AI

As a college professor, I am very familiar with AI writing, and that sentence about the martini would not have triggered my spidey sense! Which aspects of that writing scream AI? (Note - I don’t use AI at all, I’m just familiar with its cadence from my students and crappy social media posts)

I guess I would say the general “faux-etic-ness” of it. And also when you really drill down on it, it makes no sense???! She’s just comparing herself to the *size* of a martini glass, so why even describe the burn of sipping it? Just complete nonsense that is trying to sound poetic….

That makes sense - love the term “faux-etic”

I just read this VF article which immediately pinged my AI radar due to the cadence - and sure enough the AI detector I used said it’s 100% AI

I'd love to know how your husband distinguishes between a real solid book rec, vs. a well marketed book. As a reader without any insider info from the publishing industry, it's often hard to know! I like to look at books that are blurbed by authors I already know and like, but I'm not sure if that's even reliable. Maybe it just means the authors are friends?

I LOVE the photo of you guys snuggled up and reading/working. Is it in Long Island, at your old house, or somewhere else? I would love to have a window seat onto a porch set up one day!

It's my sister's house! I would love a window seat set-up like that some day too :)

What do you do to keep your writing spark alive?

I'm excited to learn of good Father's Day books

Truly, if we are doing everything we can to remove our brains from the equation, what’s the point of existence????

Thank you for writing the TLDR version of my newsletter :)

You missed one big set of games... The Stanley Cup Finals! Which is what we'll be watching with those sandwiches. :)
