I was formerly married into a family where my in-laws were European immigrants and it was considered bad luck to give people knives or other cutting instruments. You can supposedly place shiny coins (one for each blade) into the gift box to counteract. I’m sorry for putting this into other people’s heads -- I wish it weren’t in mine!
It’s not bad luck to purchase these things for yourself!
Just finally getting back to this thread - I grew up being told it could be interpreted as a sign you want to sever a relationship or as a sign of aggression, like you’re giving a weapon to initiate a fight. I can’t avoid the ingrained superstition so I’ll gift it with a quarter attached to the package so my friend gives me the quarter therefore “purchasing” the knife and outsmarting all the bad vibes.
I’ve been off dairy for a few years now and add depth and richness to mash potatoes with a few heads of roasted garlic (along with olive oil, almond milk, and Beach & Farm’s Special Salt).
I was at that race. We decided to go since it was only 20 minutes from our home and could see incredible competition. Congratulations to your girl. It was a fabulous day for running!
Congratulations to Phoebe! I'm sure running will still be a big part of her life, but what a thrill to be able to watch her grown in the sport and cheer her on all these years! Happy Thanksgiving!
The words "fry clumps of leftover stuffing in butter" are the best thing I've read all year! :)
I am so grateful for your newsletter. Thank you for brightening my days.
oooh thanks for the knife code - just picked one up as a gift. Yes, gifting knives is controversial but I still think it is a great gift.
is it? did not know that!
Seriously! Why?

Preserved lemon paste is ridiculously delicious!

Thank you, Jenny! A much-needed bright spot in my day. Getting thing organized for Thanksgiving.....I wish I had a live in cook, lol!
I always add sour cream to my mashers. No milk. And quite a bit of butter and black pepper besides salt, of course.
