Jenny! First, that greenest pasta--I'm working on a massive baking project and craving greens so hard. I have everything to make this tonight (kale in the garden, peas in the freezer!). But more importantly: how did I miss the news that you're moving to the city? A whole new season, I can not wait to follow along. I love our sleepy village life, but the one thing I'm still missing from city life is the walk to good coffee (more for the people watching than the coffee).
How did you Iike Covenant of Water?! I’m just at the beginning of it and I’m excited to dive in :) I’m treating it like a project/long-read, and reading a faster read alongside it.
That's a good way to do it -- I found that it was amazing in parts, and sorta slow in others. Though I did love the ending, but it took me a while to get there. What is the faster read you're reading alongside it?
Sea of Tranquility! Have you read it? My reading has majorly slowed down because I finally got a book deal this summer and started working on my manuscript this month! :)
Love the Verghese quote, and look forward to living in Manhattan vicariously through your posts! Also, we got this slate cutting board (dishwasher safe, very light) for all the reasons you describe. I’m surprised at how elegant it can look:
Have you ever tried these dishwasher safe cutting boards made from paper composite material? https://epicureanusa.com/products/kitchen-series?variant=42938008633594 I fell in love with these years ago. They look nice and have basic ones and also a gourmet and chef series. Can't wait to try all the above recipes in this blog post! Thanks for all the wonderful ideas!
Too funny! I think we posted the same cutting boards at the same exact time. The slate one has become my go-to board. I love the large size but am tempted to get more in the smaller sizes.
That is crazy! I have several sizes in various colors and love all of them. Even though the slate/black color is my favorite, after 5,000 washes tiny black specs have started to flake off when I chop (harmless) so I will likely go with the neutral colors going forward. Currently interested in the one that has the juice groove to catch excess liquids.
For a classic old UWS moment (though the coffee is nothing special), there's the Hungarian Pastry Shop on 110 and Amsterdam. Nice and cozy in the winter with the Cathedral view. The Plant Shed has good coffee and pastries from Colson. Gertrude on 96th is nicer and yummier than the location might suggest.
My husband says the hours we spend patting our nearly 21 year old cat don’t count toward our life span either. Plus, I live in an ocean front town so apparently will live forever!
About Coffee (at 81st and Columbus) - we were on the UWS recently and grabbed coffee there on a rainy morning on our way to Church of the City NY (meets at Rodeph Sholom Synagogue) and it made for such a lovely NYC Sunday morning :)
Prob too far south for you, I’m inferring - but both maman and Le Botaniste (which is vegan, I think) are on Columbus between 66th & 67th - and they are really pretty! Also - Peaky Barrista has several locations, yummy coffee, and a relaxed, ‘working in coffee shop’ vibe - there’s a sweet one off Broadway around 101st, but also on Columbus around 94th. Which is near Birch, which you should audition after or before you hit the Columbus Trader Joe’s! Welcome back!
I like DaCappo coffee which has UWS and UES locations (why not make your walk through the park?). Will be keeping my eye out on the UWS to welcome you to the 'hood.

I love your sleepy village life, too. :) I can't wait for that baking project book! Thanks for checking in Sarah! xoxo

Ditto on Taralucci, which is also a great spot for a cornetti! Irving Farm is a favorite on W. 79th. I often pick up a bag of beans for home as well.
For the full UWS experience, Zabar's cafe has excellent coffee and of course bagels.
I've been on UWS for 12 years. Welcome to the neighborhood!

living the dream!
Pasta looks fabulous, is there broccolini in there also?
yes, but it can be anything you want.
Thanks and good luck with the move!

Hands down Black Press, new neighbor!
Both those recipes look incredible! And thanks for the recommendation. I'm adding Patrick Keefe to my list.

Taralucci & Vino on 83rd and Columbus is my Italian fantasy cafe on the UWS!
I didn't know they had an UWS location -- the Union Sq. one has long been a favorite.
The woman who works the morning shift is UWS famous!
Ordering the board right now !!!
You're moving to the City? How exciting!
